WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF ECOCIDE?
“Unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and either widespread or long-term damage to the environment being caused by those acts.”
HOW CAN WE PROTECT NATURE?
By the establishment of an international ecocide law.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has jurisdiction based on a powerful legal document: the Rome Statute.
Based on the Rome Statute, the ICC can investigate, prosecute and try individuals under international laws if a state does not, cannot or is unwilling to do so.
Ecocide is suggested to be added as the fifth international crime within the jurisdiction of the ICC. The four current international crimes are: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression.
WHAT MAKES IT A NO-BRAINER?
Humans are the only species responsible for mass damage and destruction of nature on planet Earth.
We are nature. Nature makes everything alive. By harming nature we are harming ourselves and everything around us.
Law is the system of rules humans have agreed upon. We need a law that makes ecocide an international crime in order to protect nature and ourselves from ourselves.
